David - fond memories. I remember the incident so well and as I have told you, it merits a couple paragraphs in my family history which I hope to complete by year's end (12 generations in America on both sides of my family). For the most part, I loved my time in Pittsburgh - the city, the companies we covered, the staff - it was exciting. At the time Pittsburgh was home to more Fortune 500 companies than any city in the country except NYC and Chicago. We covered companies and industries that moved America--steel, aluminum, coal, Gulf Oil, PPG Industries--companies of substance that made things. I don't think I could cover today's AI boom or chip industry. I was sorry to see you leave, you were a good reporter and fun to work with. As you know, I too, left a few years later. I had a growing family and the Journal paid in bylines, not cash. The year I left, 1974, our bureau had more front page stories than any other in the Journal system except NYC, Washington and London, and yet I couldn't afford a new Ford or Chevy. Still, wonderful time, many great memories, an education in business and economics that no MBA school could have offered. I miss it and have read the paper daily since I joined in 1967. Keep in touch. jack
