It has taken a long time to begin to identify as author rather than newspaper columnist – forty years, four books, to be precise. Now that the bell lap has begun on the fifth, I find it easier than before to remember that I write the Sunday columns to support the book. Expect for a while a little more economics, a little less politics.

That there are fewer typos owes to the kindness of Richard Pitkin, a discerning reader since earliest Boston Globe days.

Substack remains a work in progress. Such are its mechanisms that it is harder now to thank subscribers personally for their renewals. I am working on that; meanwhile, thank you all! I remain grateful beyond the telling of it for the privileges of writing for this excellent audience
