Substack Subscriber Report No. 2

The first round of Substack automatic renewals has come and mostly gone. I didn’t do as well on thank-yous as I had hoped. Renewals came in a wave, on days when I was traveling. I miss certain aspects of the old once-a-year fund-raising appeals. I am grateful to each and to all.

That said, there is something different, and, to my mind, better, about the Substack platform. It feels more writerly, invites more thinking ahead, creates more momentum, and the back-office and fulfillment functions are vastly superior to the improvised set-up before. After a year, I am glad that I switched.

I have not mastered the thread business, perhaps because writing is hard enough without the implicit promises of give-and-take. So I’ll routinely enable comments for subscribers, and give up on threads unless inspiration strikes. Typos remain a problem.  I am working on that.
