I wish some level-headed commentator was keeping an eye on the four major papers and Bloomberg. There doesn't seem to be much regular press criticism at all these days.

Paul Gigot has been an unmitigated disaster for the WSJ. His atavistic conservatism was a museum piece before his ascendance at WSJ. Luckily, the news division was given the freedom to do real investigating and reporting. The editorial page has been unreadable for many years.

Transgender people are the most marginalized people in our society, victims of violence and often driven to suicide. In the meantime African Americans as a group are at the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum and continue to suffer from the lingering effects of slavery, Jim Crow, redlining and the like. One would think therefore that treating trans people as human beings and respecting their rights, as well as acknowledging our history of racism, are the right things to do, and in any event don’t cost anybody anything. And yet Gerry Baker’s sense of self is apparently so fragile that he sees this as “tyranny”. And he presumably is one of the saner conservatives!
